Is It Possible For Medical Billing Specialists To Use Voice Recognition Software?
Paul asks…
Can A Medical Billing Specialist Use Voice Recognition Software?
I have arthritis in my hands and want to learn to use voice recognition software to avoid typing so much. I also want to find a job in the healthcare area, such as a medical billing specialist or something similar. Would it be possible to use speech-to-text software in this arena or a closely related one?

Education Admin answers:
You could use it for MT but not coding. I mean it could “read” the medical report to you for you to abstract diagnosis, procedures, supplies, etc. However, there is not a lot of typing in coding/billing.
From the MTatHome Admin:
It Is Important To Know That The Medical Transcription Career Field Will Be Around For A Long Time To Come!
There are some MTs that worry about being replaced by computer
software with all the advancement in technology the past few years.Yes, the technology is improving every year; however, it does not
have the brain that a human does. It cannot tell between words that
sound alike and have different meanings when it comes to medical
terminology. Many of the words are extremely complex for the VR
software to get everything correct in a report. These documents are too
important to allow any kind of mistakes by a computer to happen. Some physicians do use voice recognition and have for years. This is
nothing new. However, even the physicians that choose to use the
voice-recognition software to create the medical reports realize that
they still need a real MT (human) to proofread and edit the computer
generated report. This is where the new position has opened up for MTs called Medical Transcription Editing.
For those MTs that might be worried about being replaced by a fancy
software system, please remember that you are still going to be needed.Lots of physicians have tried the computer software vs. the human MT,
and they almost always come back to the MT’s for more accurate work.MTs have been making a nice living for years, and it is only going to
get better now that it has gone from tapes to digital transcription.
You can live in one state and work for a physician in another state
because the work can be downloaded through a secure server online. It is important to know that accuracy is the MOST important factor in transcribing.
While you’re typing speed will factor in how much you make per hour
when being paid by the character line, if you have a lot of mistakes,
you will be unemployed. Yes, you do need to have a good typing speed
so that you can complete your work in the time allowed for a deadline.
However, accuracy needs to be the main focus. If you are not an MT and are looking into the medical transcription career field, then it is important to realize that you must be trained in medical transcription editing as well.
Please make sure that the medical transcription school you take your MT course through offers medical transcription editing within their curriculum. Original story here.

How Do You Become A Medical Billing And Coding Speciailist?
Right now I’m going to apply to college and I really want to be a pediatrician, but it takes too much time and money. So I want to start out small like becoming a medical billing and coding specialist, but I don’t know how.
Can anyone help me on what classes I need to take and tell me how many years does it take to become a medical biller. Please and thank you.
I go to Valencia at Orlando, Florida.

Education Admin answers:
In order to become a medical billing specialist, you must either earn your associate degree through a medical coding and billing program or earn your certification through a vocational school. This process can range anywhere from 6 months to two years, depending on the program and which route you take.
With that said, here are some courses you can expect to take: Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, Computer Learning, Health Data, Coding & Classification, Legal & Ethical Issues, and Field Experience. For a full description of what exactly you’ll learn in these classes click here: http://www.medicalcodingtrainingonline.org/what-kind-of-medical-coding-classes-are-required.
As far as salary is concerned it will vary depending on location and your previous level of experience. But according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics, the average salary earned in 2008 (the most recent statistics available) was $30,610. The highest paying positions are located in the Federal Executive Branch and general and surgical hospitals, the average earning $42,760. The top 10% of medical billers earned $50,060.
The Bureau also states that job prospects for those aspiring to become medical coding specialist looks excellent. The Bureau predicts that the career opportunities will increase by 18 percent within the next decade, creating 30,000 new jobs.

How can I start my own medical billing and coding business?
I have a certification in medical billing and coding that has expired. I am getting it restored and after this, I would like to start my own medical billing/coding business from home. I have no idea where to begin. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

Education Admin answers:
My wife started that type of business this year. Because of the liability involved, her lawyer recommended she incorporate and purchase insurance. The insurance is about $2,500 per year. The incorporation and other related legal advice cost about $1,000. Then, she also had to buy the coding books and programs.

How To Get Started Doing Medical Billing Or Transcription From Home?
I have my certificate in medical billing and reception and also took a couple transcription classes. I have a 2 year old son and no babysitter for me to work out of the house as my wife works days, but is on call 24/7. Where can I find a billing or transcription job working from home?

Education Admin answers:
Contact either www.accutranglobal.com and/or www.mountainwestprocessing.com for legitimate transcription jobs online. They both require high speed internet access, I believe, and a minimum typing speed. There is also a transcription section at www.wahm.com with a whole list of legitimate transcription companies and great support from an online transcriptionist community.

Trying To Start A Medical Billing Company-How Do I Get Clients?
Trying to start a medical billing service and I am having problems getting around the oiffice managers to get a direct conversation with the doctors. Any suggestions?

Education Admin answers:
I agree! The staff will not only get you in the door but if you get them to like and trust you you might not have to convince the doctor at all to sign up for your services. I can’t tell you the amount of times this has happened for my homebased medical billing business.
I usually keep this secret close to heart but for 2011 I give it to you with the hopes that you can profit from it. Call the doctors office and schedule a 2011 physical! Once inside then you can say what you want to the doctor (don’t be overly pushy as if that’s the real reason you are there).
You can tell the Dr. That you were referred to him by your private physician (that you also used to do their billing) that recently moved their practice to another state.
Yes, I know it’s crafty and a little underhanded but to be successful at the marketing and sales side of owning a medical billing business comes from you being creative.
I also suggest that you do the following things in 2012 to better your odds at becoming a master at selling and marketing your services:
1) Join one (two if you can afford it) active medical billing organization so you can get proven marketing and sales advice and examples of marketing materials from other successful medical billing businesses around the nation.
2) Read, internalize and implement what you learn from the three ebooks that I will list below in the sources section. This is how I learned to become creative, efficient and effective in my sales and marketing practices and most of all landing as many as 4 out of every 10 physicians that I approach for their business.
I wish you the best in 2012!
